This has been frustrating however it's beginning to look like there's light at the end of the tunnel.
I thought I'd install Macports so I could install the full version of Gimp on Tiger (OS X 10.4). First you have to find your install cds. After downloading Macports itself, installing and trying to install Gimp2, I found that the version of xcode on the install cds is not sufficient.
Ok, so update the software within OS X and try again. Still no luck. Looks like you have to go to ADC (Apple Developer Connection) to get the xcode 2.4.1 or 2.5 download. So there's more time with that.
Lots of reboots later and I'm currently waiting for macports to finish installing Gimp2. I guess it's taking a long time since it's the first macport install and is having to download and install all dependencies.
Why bother?
Well the versions of Gimp available for OS X don't allow you to add plug-ins for linux gimp. The version on macports should. Plus I get the impression that macports will be useful for other experiments.
Advice
- Find your install disks before you start
- Get yourself a Apple Developer Connection log-in (or convert your current Apple log-in)
- Be prepared for a few hours of doing nothing while your mac is busy downloading or installing
