A more sci-fi oriented showreel

Another Showreel - this time for sci-fi projects

A short collection of mp3s forming the basis of several sci-fi themes.

Status

Just a short note. These tracks are currently unfinished. If a client decides they're the right style for their project, then they'll move up the list and become a much higher priority. Until then, I'll move them along in line with other priorities.

1. A space opera theme tune. It starts orchestral, ends up with rock. Not sure I'd ever use the two sequentially like that, but I can see a place to have both in the same movie/series

2. This one's more atmospheric. I imagine a typical moving shot as the camera viewpoint increases in altitude and/or distance, perhaps panning over to a more detail towards the end.

3. More ethnic than straight rock. Very fun to compose and record. Lots of potential, just depends on what it needs to sync to.

4. Indie Rock track with full-on guitars and drums. No bass in this version. I'm undecided whether it needs any. Usually I'd bass in for a rock track, but in this case the guitar parts fill the gap nicely.

5. Heavy, slow and moody. Imagine the main protagonist scanning a bar/gambling den. Could easily lead into a more violent or humourous ending.

6. A brief look into a modernised version of 80s sci-fi themes Synths, drums and heavy guitars bring cult sci-fi soundtrack into this century.

Licensing

These tracks are all copyright 2008 Award Sounds. Contact Award Sounds for licensing terms.

The Hand.wav is a short piece of background music I was asked to write for a sitcom. This version is a 48Kz/16bit wav file. To download, right-click on The Hand.wav and "save target as"/"save link as" depending on which browser you use.

A more download-friendly mp3 is also available at this link: The Hand.mp3

Showreel 3

A piece of music from a few years ago, part of the Tales from The Olive Grove album, some of which was featured in Showreel 2.

There's something about this piece, Freedom, that I've always liked from a composition and performance perspective. Nowadays I'd play and record it differently to achieve a better sound and production.

For a start, I'd ensure that the recording system didn't introduce blurts (can't think of a better word, but you'll recognise them when you hear them). There are only two blurts and if you're not listening carefully, you may miss them or attribute them to something else in your environment. I'd also change the drums to something closer to the times; midi drums like that were fine then, but not now.

You never know, if I find suitable time on my hands, I may just re-record it.

Showreel 2

The first file consists of extracts of ideas from an album I was writing about 5 years ago called Tales from the Olive Grove. It's mainly 2 acoustic guitars, swapping between steel and nylon strings as appropriate. There are some recording errors (listen carefully for the sound of breathing being recorded and some harddisk issues corrupting the audio) - none of which I'm likely to make nowadays.

The second is a heavier selection of tracks, with mainly distorted, high-gain electric guitars and powerful drums. Some of the guitar lines were recorded DI, some mic'ed.

The third is a random selection adding to the range already shown in the first showreel

If you like what you hear and want to use it or want to hear more, then Contact Award Sounds.

Showreel 1

Here is a brief selection of some of the music that Award Sounds has created over the few years as well as some musical ideas that I'd created before that. As I move through the library, I'll upload the better material so you'll see an improvement in the quality of composition and production over time. This first crop of excerpts go back about 3 years.

I fully intend to include further examples of work and to separate the music into different styles. My aim is to have a showreel file each for orchestral, jazz, rock, acoustic and electronic. There will also be separate files for some that didn't make the grade for one reason or another and a discussion of why they didn't. And there will be some that I felt worth showing because they have some essence that works, either an energy, a style or captured the mood of the time.

All of these are copyright Award Sounds unless a different license is explicitly mentioned. For a license to distribute or to commission bespoke compositions, please contact Award Sounds.

The file is Award Sounds Website 01.mp3
